Other Types of Teen Addictions
It is tempting to think that alcohol and drugs are the only addiction problems teens might be facing at any given time, but that is by no means the case. True enough, drugs and alcohol are bad enough, but unfortunately, there are other types of teen addictions -- many other types -- so it is more important than ever to be as vigilant as possible. Throughout the course of this article, we are going to discuss some of the other addiction problems children between the ages of twelve and twenty can face, what to look out for, and how you can help.
As stated, teens can be addicted to a number of different things. They face the risk of becoming addicted to the internet, to food, to pornography, to stealing or shoplifting, to gambling, and to self injury, just to name a few. Teenage addiction is like hell on Earth for the afflicted teens -- and it is hellish for their parents and guardians as well. The sad truth, however, is that an increasing number of teens are addicted to something, whether it is drugs, sex, or stealing. Even an addiction to food can wreak havoc on a teen's life. Drugs and alcohol are not the only killing addictions out there.
Parents need to be extremely vigilant, they need to no what signs to look out for concerning the behavior, demeanor, and attitude of their teen. Although there is a wide variety of addictions, many of the signs and effects are the same. For instance, a teen who has an addiction problem, even with the other types of teen addictions, may suffer in his or her school work. The teen's grades will get lower, their performance will decline, and this can have a tremendously adverse effect on the future.
Depression is another common effect. Addictions to food, shoplifting, gambling, or pornography can and generally will all result in depression. Because so many teens feel some level of depression anyway, this can be especially dangerous. Addictions to such things as pornography and food can also lead to feelings of shame and a decline in self esteem.
Indifference is a sign as well. A teen with an addiction problem will typically begin to lack interest in the activities he or she once loved. This sign is often tied into feelings of depression, not to mention feelings of intense isolation.
As most of us know, teenagers suffer mood swings at the drop of a hat. An addiction can cause even more mercurial mood swings, so it is important to pay very close attention. Feelings and acts of violence are not uncommon with addiction either. Because this can be extremely dangerous to others, it is especially important to watch for.
Teens who are addicted to something will often have health problems as well. Naturally substance abuse problems can be detrimental to the teen's health, but addictions to things such as food, porn, the internet, video games, and so on, can lead to obesity, due to overeating in the case of food addiction and the leading of a sedentary lifestyle in the case of the others.
